The Barel story

A guest having a draft beer on Barel's sidewalk with his dog on his lap, under the red sign

Barel opened in December 2022 on Avenida Olegário Maciel in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro — in Jardim Oceânico, the neighbourhood’s main dining strip, minutes from Barra beach and Praia do Pepê, and a short walk from the metro station. The idea was an old and simple one: a proper street bar, with a well-poured draft, honest Brazilian cooking and tables on the sidewalk, in a neighbourhood with plenty of restaurants and few bars.

It caught on fast. Within a year the place was in the city guides: VEJA RIO wrote about the “well-poured drafts” and the playful takes on classic bar food, and O Globo listed Barel among the new additions to Rio’s bar circuit. The space was designed by André Rodrigues Arquitetura with Hot Branding: 150 m² of exposed brick, a living plant wall, the bar at the back and a long veranda that became the house signature. It seats 110.

But what defines Barel isn’t the press. It’s that it became a neighbourhood bar. It’s where people who live in Barra da Tijuca turn up in flip-flops after the beach, meet for Friday happy hour, bring the family for Sunday lunch and celebrate birthdays. Visitors tend to like it for exactly that reason: it isn’t a tourist bar, it’s the bar the locals are in — and you sit on the same sidewalk they do.

In the kitchen, chefs Fabiano Dias and Paulo Vieira Junior cook real Brazilian food: feijoada served every day, baião de dois, seafood moqueca, picanha, the house pastel, classic bar snacks, oven pizzas, burgers and sandwiches, and desserts worth staying for. At the bar, the list is by mixologist Alex Miranda — the fitz barel, which put the house among the six bars in Rio picked by VEJA RIO, the carajillo guests call the best in town, caipirinhas, wine, and the ice-cold Brahma draft that brings most people through the door the first time.

Barel works as a neighbourhood bar and as a destination. It’s executive lunch Tuesday to Friday, it’s after the beach, it’s happy hour, it’s dinner that turns into a night out, it’s where you watch the football, it’s Sunday lunch with the family, and it’s where much of Barra celebrates birthdays and year-end parties. Tuesday to Sunday, from noon to 2am.
